Timber vs Colorbond: Which Fence Suits Your Block

Timber and Colorbond are the two fences most Australian homeowners actually choose between, and neither one wins outright. Timber is cheaper to install and easy to repair one paling at a time, while Colorbond needs far less maintenance, resists fire and termites, and holds up longer near the coast if you pick the right coating. Which one suits your block comes down to your climate, what the fence will cost you over its whole life rather than just on day one, and whether you are in a bushfire-prone area where the rules narrow your choice regardless of preference.

Upfront cost

Treated pine paling fencing is generally the cheapest option to install, often 15 to 30 percent below a Colorbond sheet fence of the same height and length, mainly because the material itself is cheaper even though labour is similar. Hardwood palings (blackbutt, red gum and similar) sit above treated pine and can approach Colorbond pricing once you account for the denser, harder-to-work timber. Lifespan

This is where the comparison starts to even out. A well-built treated pine paling fence typically lasts 10 to 15 years before palings start splitting, cupping or rotting at ground contact, though individual palings can be swapped out along the way. Hardwood palings can push past 20 years if maintained. Colorbond, properly installed with adequate footings, commonly lasts 25 years or more, and the steel does not rot, split or warp the way timber does. Over a 25 year horizon the higher upfront cost of Colorbond is frequently offset by not having to partially or fully replace a timber fence twice in that time.

Maintenance

Timber needs periodic attention: painting or oiling every few years to protect against UV and moisture, checking for loose or rotting palings, and replacing individual boards as they fail. Skip the maintenance and a treated pine fence will look tired and start failing well before its notional lifespan. Colorbond needs essentially none of that. An occasional hose-down to clear dust and salt build-up near the coast is about it. If low ongoing effort matters more to you than upfront price, that alone can settle the decision.

Noise

Solid timber paling fences and solid Colorbond sheet fences perform similarly as basic sound barriers, both relying on mass and having no gaps rather than any special acoustic property. Where Colorbond pulls ahead is in purpose-built acoustic profiles, heavier-gauge sheet designed and tested for busy roads, which timber generally cannot match without adding a second layer or increasing thickness substantially. If you are fencing next to a main road or a busy laneway, ask specifically about acoustic-rated Colorbond rather than assuming standard sheet will do the job.

Heat

Colorbond absorbs and re-radiates heat, and a dark-coloured steel fence can get uncomfortably hot to touch in direct summer sun, which matters if the fence runs close to a pool, an outdoor living area, or plants that do not like radiated heat. Lighter Colorbond colours reduce this but do not eliminate it. Timber stays cooler to the touch and radiates less heat back into a courtyard or garden bed. If you have a north or west-facing boundary that copes hard summer sun, this is a genuine point in timber's favour, though it needs weighing against Colorbond's fire resistance in the same hot, dry conditions.

Termites

This one is close to a clean win for Colorbond. Termites do not eat steel. Treated pine is chemically treated to resist termite attack but is not immune, particularly at cut ends, ground contact points, or where the treatment has been compromised, and hardwood varies by species in its natural termite resistance. In termite-prone regions, especially parts of Queensland, northern New South Wales and the Northern Territory, Colorbond removes a whole category of risk that timber owners have to actively manage with inspections and, where needed, chemical barriers.

Bushfire risk (BAL ratings)

Fencing in a designated bushfire-prone area is assessed under AS 3959 using Bushfire Attack Level (BAL) ratings, from BAL-Low through to BAL-40 and BAL-FZ (Flame Zone). Colorbond, being non-combustible steel, generally performs well against radiant heat and ember attack compared with timber, and is frequently the preferred or required choice for fencing attached to, or within a certain distance of, a dwelling in higher BAL zones. Timber fencing directly attached to a house wall in a high BAL zone can itself become a path for fire to reach the building. That said, requirements differ by state, by council, and by the specific BAL rating assigned to your property, so this is genuinely a case where you need to confirm the actual requirement with your local council or a bushfire consultant rather than assume Colorbond alone satisfies every condition.

Coastal corrosion

Within a few hundred metres of the coast, salt-laden air attacks unprotected or poorly coated steel, and standard Colorbond in a marine environment can show corrosion, particularly at cut edges and fixing points, faster than it would inland. Manufacturers rate their coatings for different corrosion zones, and coastal or severe marine areas typically need a specific coating grade rather than the standard residential product, along with correctly sealed cut edges. Timber does not corrode, though it faces its own coastal challenges from salt spray drying out and greying the surface, and from higher humidity accelerating rot if it is not treated and maintained. If your block is close to the water, ask your supplier specifically about the coastal-rated Colorbond range rather than the standard sheet.

Resale value

Buyers and agents generally read a straight, well-maintained fence, in either material, as a sign the property has been looked after, and a sagging, grey, half-rotten paling fence reads the opposite way regardless of what it says about the rest of the house. Colorbond's advantage at resale is less about the material itself and more about the fact that a 10 or 15 year old Colorbond fence still looks close to new, where a timber fence of the same age often visibly shows it. If you are fencing purely with resale timing in mind, a straight, current Colorbond boundary is close to a guaranteed presentation win.

When each one wins

Timber wins when upfront budget is the main constraint, when you want a fence that stays cool to touch next to a pool or outdoor area, or when you are matching an existing timber streetscape where a steel fence would look out of place. Colorbond wins when you want minimal ongoing maintenance, when termites or bushfire risk are real factors for your property, or when you are fencing for the long term and want to avoid a second full replacement inside 15 years. On a corner block or anywhere height and setback rules come into play, both materials are subject to the same council height and boundary rules, so check those limits before you settle on a material.
